Reggie Becton Talks “SadBoy, Vol 1”, Musical Influences, Moving To Los Angeles, & More

Reggie Becton is a bold storyteller, who shoots straight from the heart with every emotion emphatically oozing out. His music is an audible depiction of the emotional complexities that millennial men face when dealing with love, life, and loss. Inspired by the likes of Marvin Gaye, Prince, Tank, Avant, and Brandy, the PG County native’s music is a unique fusion of classic R&B, Hip-hop, new-age soul, and funk-Rock. Dubbed one of Apple Music’s “Artists We’ll Love”, Reggie has been featured in publications like Billboard, OkayPlayer, Pitchfork, DefPen, BET, Teen Vogue, OnestoWatch, and on platforms like RNB Radar, and Meta’s We The Culture.

Equipped with vulnerable lyrics and a sultry suede vocal tone, Reggie found major success with the release of his debut album, California in 2021. Inspired by Reggie’s big move across the country to Los Angeles, the project explores the hardships one faces when leaving “HOME” to chase their dreams. Tackling everything from toxic masculinity, forgiveness, and heartbreak, to self-love, the 12-song set has garnered over 10 million streams across digital streaming platforms since its release and has landed coveted spots in Billboard’s “Fresh Picks of the Week” (“Issues,” “So High,” “Rm 143”); and Uproxx’s “Best New R&B,” with The Source stating “Reggie Becton consistently shows he has something to offer in the new age of R&B’s renaissance.”

Presently, Reggie is hard at work on his two-part EP titled, Sadboy. Sadboy Vol. 1 is a true reflection of love in the face of lingering trauma, unrequited affections, and toxic tendencies. It is Reggie’s curation of emotions taking listeners on an audible journey that is somber yet fiery. Heavily inspired by Reggie’s love for comic books and films like Kill Bill and The Dark Knight Trilogy, Reggie says the project is “R&B music for the people of Gotham City” with a sonic identity that drifts seamlessly from the Badboy “bounce” to the Pharrell “groove”, and the ever-classic Timbo “knock. Sadboy Vol 1. features production from Jahnei Clarke (Masego, 6ix9ine, Lil Dicky) Aidan Carroll (THEY, Rexx Life Rajj, Lizzo), Sonic Major (Drake, Future, Tems), Ariana Wong (Kash Paige, Sabrina Claudio, SNOT). The project will be released with an episodic audiovisual series created by Reggie and Directed by Chris Felix (Listenin, RM.143, SWAY). Checkout our latest interview with Reggie !
